One thing that people don't realize when dealing with redness and sensitized skin is that they likely contributed to the condition by over-using acids and other types of actives that stripped the lipid barrier leaving their skin vulnerable and unprotected.
Unless you have had allergies and skin sensitivities since childhood or puberty, it is most likely that sensitized skin is the result of overzealous application after binging on YouTube influencer videos. We get it, you want to stay informed and education is key, but it is perilous to follow everyone's advice at the same time.
We had a long convo with one of our favorite influencers, Elle Leary, and she is constantly telling her followers to integrate treatments and practices slowly and to take it easy on using multiple acids and active ingredients at the same time.
So, what is sensitized skin?
You know that your skin is sensitized when it manifests some or all of the following:
- Skin is raw or chapped looking
- Skin is painful to the touch or appears to be “angry”
- Burning and/or stinging sensation with water or formulas designed for sensitive skin
- Skin appears to have a hot red mask along the outer edges of the face - you can see the line of demarcation where actives are applied.
- Products sting or burn on the face but not on the neck when you do a spot test.
What is the difference between Sensitive Skin and Sensitized Skin?
Sensitive skin has been delicate and reactive since childhood and may develop redness or a rash when exposed to detergent, certain foods, pollen and & fragrances. Sensitized skin is created when the lipid barrier is constantly compromised and stripped aggressive ingredients and acids.
The number one myth about aggressive long term treatments is that by creating inflammation or by tricking the skin into thinking that it is injured it will produce collagen, therefore, making the skin appear younger. In fact, unless you are receiving professional treatments by a licensed esthetician or a dermatologist such as peels or laser you are doing more harm than good by keeping your skin and an elevated state of cellular inflammation. Extended cellular inflammation actually has the reverse effect and will age your skin dramatically.
Daily use of aha BHA and retinol and peptides is a wonderful way to naturally and gently stimulate collagen, however, you want to be careful not to use them all at the same time or in high concentrations.
